10 for Tuesday – Comfort Movies
Greetings. Apologies for the delay in posting. I spent the end of May and the beginning of June hella sick and dealing with some personal drama. Things are evening out, so hopefully, I’ll be posting here more often. I figured since I spent several weeks just coasting through life, finding what comfort I could in little doses, I’d give you some insight into my comfort watches. Here are my 10 comfort movies. Sometimes I watch them. Sometimes I have them on in the background while I’m tackling chores.
Moneyball – A baseball movie about how Billy Beane, played by Brad Pitt, changed the financial game of baseball. This is a completely different kind of baseball movie. It’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time. “How can you not be romantic about baseball?”
Speed Racer – The one by the Wachowskis. I grew up with the original Speed Racer cartoons. I’ve loved this movie since I saw it in theaters and go back to it every couple of months. It’s pure, innocent fun. And, of course, Tim Curry.
The Gentlemen – A Guy Richie film. Probably his best. This follows big players in the London drug scene. It’s got an all-star cast led by Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Grant. The narrative is full of twists and turns that remain fresh even after several dozen viewings.
The Princess Bride – This should be on everyone’s comfort watch list. The only things that don’t stand up in this movie are the toys in Fred Savage’s bedroom. Other than that, it might as well have been made this year.
Now You See Me – Another all-star cast: Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and more. This movie is a heist movie, a magic movie, an FBI procedural movie, and the twist at the end is killer.
Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves – I’ll dive back into this movie on a whim every few months. My nerdy soul loves it. You can tell everyone working on it had a great time. They take the movie seriously, but not themselves. Knowing all the little D&D easter eggs helps with the enjoyment, but they aren’t necessary to get wrapped up in the plots and schemes. Chris Pine shines in the lead, and everyone else brings their A game.
Lucky Number Sleven – Bruce Willis, Josh Hartnett, Lucy Liu, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, and more make this frantic-paced, action comedy of errors breathtaking and brilliant.
Edge of Tomorrow – Possibly Tom Cruise’s best action movie. It’s Groundhog Day with guns, explosions, and aliens. It’s so much fun and a super underrated film.
Fast Five – Easily the best of The Fast and the Furious franchise, with one of the best chase scenes ever. Don’t come at me about how unrealistic these movies are. I know. That’s part of the point. It’s silly, over-the-top fun.
Kung Fu Panda – This is a masterclass in call-back storytelling. And… It’s just fun. First saw this in the theaters because I was a dad with young boys, and sometimes you go see movies you’d rather not see because you love your kids. I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining this was. Then, after multiple viewings, I figured out how utterly and profoundly great this movie is.
What are some of your comfort movies? Let me know in the comments.
