Sacrifice

The thing came at us. Out of the closet. Why is it always in the closet? The thing. Coming for us. Wife screams. I vomit. It makes some sound like radio static chewing on curdled milk. Gets stuck in my ears. That sound. Can’t hear my wife. See her. Feel her hand on my wrist. Pulling. Wife is pulling me away. Sound in my ears makes my head a doldrum of banality. Wife yanks. Hard. Pulls me away from that cottage cheese in the sun sound making moistness of my eardrums. Further I get, less my mind lingers in the moment of midnight staring into a refrigerator unable to choose or walk away. “Gun case!” Wife’s screaming words tsunami a linebacker crunching past the mayonnaise malaise. Scrambling. Bouncing off walls and around corners. We had gone to the shooting range. Pistol in the gun case. One bullet left. Our silly self-defense superstition. Keeping one bullet should mean we’ll never have to use it. Right? The thing’s slithering sounds slide back into my ears. One bullet. I feel the impossibility of its undulating form like being slathered in chewing tobacco spit being licked up by cockroaches scuttling across my skin in the same way I smell and taste its sounds through my skin. Load the one bullet. Become Lin Alexander Manuel Hamilton Miranda with this shot. Wife whimpering. On her knees, gibbering and salivating. My mind widdershins. Careful aim. At her forehead. One has to suffer whatever this thing wants. Won’t be her.
